SunCal Promises to Donate Land for Castaic High School

SunCal renews its promise to donate land for Castaic High School by 2008.

In an attempt to ease Castaic area parents’ concerns, SunCal has restated its promise to donate the 60 acres of land allocated for Castaic High School by 2008 so the school can complete construction by 2010.

The land for Castaic High School is tied into SunCal’s proposed 4000-home development at Castaic Northlake, which is still in the planning stages. Parents are concerned that the decreased demand for housing in the area could put off construction of this development, which in turn would delay construction of the new high school. SunCal claims that the high school will be part of the first phases of the development.

Members of the Castaic School Board are not optimistic that Castaic High School will be ready for students by 2010, even with SunCal’s new promise. The environmental impact report for the SunCal Castaic Northlake project was only recently submitted, so there is much more to do before this development can become a reality.

It would appear that SunCal is using the promise of the much-anticipated Castaic High School facility as a bargaining chip in getting the Los Angeles County Planning Commission to push through its approval for the development. It can easily take more than a year for a project to go from the initial environmental impact report to full approval under normal circumstances.
