Santa Clarita, CA Yard Waste Used to Teach Children About Green Recycling

Clippings for Carrots program in Santa Clarita teaches children about uses for recycled yard waste.

Agromin has recently distributed 375 "Carrots for Kids" kits in the Santa Clarita area to teach children to grow vegetables and about the benefits of green recycling in conjunction with Newhall Land’s "Clippings for Carrots" program.

Recycled yard waste from Santa Clarita households is used to create the soil for the "Carrots for Kids" kits, and is also used in Newhall Land’s agricultural programs. Agromin also provides Ventura County farmers with recycled soil products for their orchards and fields.

According to Agromin, the soil included with each of their seed kits contains recycled green material (i.e., lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs) that is chopped, cleaned and naturally composted.

If you’re not recycling your yard waste, you should! It’s quite easy, with the free yard waste bins provided by Santa Clarita area trash haulers. It helps the farmers, teaches children about recycling, and keeps recyclable products out of our local (overflowing) landfills. Be sure to put only leaves, grass, lumber, small branches and yard trimmings into your Recycling Barrel for curbside pickup.

Agromin is the green waste recycler for 19 cities in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. They receive and process 20,000 tons of urban wood and green waste each month.

"Residents help farmers by making sure they put their green waste in their green recycling bins each week," said Bill Camarillo, Agromin CFO.

The "Carrots for Kids" kits are designed for Ages 6-12 and include a container with tray (lid), 2 four quart bags of Agromin’s Vegetable Garden Mix, baby carrot seeds, plant labels, pencil, stickers, activity booklet, bookmark, and Learner’s Guide including Agrotivities.
