Water-Wise, Fire-Wise and Worm-Wise Gardening in Santa Clarita
Smart Gardening Workshops teach residents to reduce yard waste and improve their lawns and gardens.
Los Angeles County is sponsoring a series of Smart Gardening Workshops to teach residents to reduce yard waste and improve their lawns and gardens.
These Smart Gardening Workshops will teach water-wise and fire-wise gardening as well as composting, worm composting and grasscycling. These two-hour workshops are free of charge and no reservations are needed.
At the Smart Gardening Workshops, participants will be taught to use the tools and techniques necessary to reuse readily available resources. They’ll receive step by step instructions on how to compost, and be educated on the benefits and biology of compost.
As a bonus, workshop participants will be able to buy composting and worm composting bins at reduced prices thanks to arrangements made by Los Angeles County with the bin manufacturers. A backyard compost bin is only $20 (limit 2 per household) and worm composting bins are $45 (limit 2 for these as well). Be sure to bring cash if you want to buy these bins!
Red Wigglers (African Red Worms), the most common type of composting worm, are available through the Los Angeles County Smart Gardening Program. Red Wigglers are also known as Tiger worms, Garlic worms, Manure worms, and Brandling worms.
A little humor for those who don’t remember the most famous childhood worm song:
Nobody likes me,
Everybody hates me,
Guess I’ll go eat worms,Long, thin, slimy ones,
Short, fat, juicy ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy wuzzy worms.
The next Santa Clarita workshop will be Saturday, July 21 from 9am to 11am at the Castaic Lake Water Agency site located at 27234 Bouquet Canyon Rd. in Saugus.
