Santa Clarita Steps Up Code Enforcement Actions

Public complaints spur increased code enforcement actions in Santa Clarita.

The City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have had Code Enforcement on their minds lately, with increasing numbers of Santa Clarita residents complaining of nuisances in their neighborhoods. Although many of these complaints have been regarding overcrowded homes, these complaints can also be related to homes in need of repairs or maintenance or those with trash in their yards.

The County has established a Nuisance Abatement Team (NAT) in the Santa Clarita area that focuses on serious violations that would require responses from multiple County departments.

When code violations are evaluated, the County may involve the Department of Public Works, Regional Planning, Fire, Sheriff, the District Attorney and Environmental Health as well as possibly Animal Care and Control, Children and Family Services, and Business License departments.

The NAT is only concerned with serious code violations, and is most concerned where there are multiple serious violations on a single property. To report these types of violations, call 661.222.2940 or fax your complaint to 661.222.2947.

Complaints that do not require a visit by the NAT will be referred to the appropriate agency or department. The District Attorney’s Code Enforcement Section will work with the property owners and area residents to assist in bringing properties into compliance with the current codes. Those who fail to cooperate with voluntary compliance will face possible administrative fines, non-compliance fees and criminal prosecution.
