Comment about: Newhall Hardware Closes Its Doors After Celebrating 60 Years in Business

| January 30, 2008 | | Linda -- Thank you so much for the commentary on Newhall Hardware. The lack of positive intervention by the City of Santa Clarita in saving these historical stores smacks of shortsighted vision. Stores like Newhall Hardware and The Antique Flower Shop provide a unique environment that you cannot find elsewhere. That is why people go there, it's for the experience. We will obviously lose some more of our country charm once the store closes its doors. Saving gems like this is what the downtown Newhall Redevelopment should be about. It's nice to see renovation but if we have cookie cutter stores for trendy shoppers, I'm afraid that we've missed the point of this whole exercise. I live in Agua Dulce now even though I was a long time resident of Newhall. We have a similar hardware store but nothing close to the history that Newhall Hardware carries with it. My hope is always that wise city planning can strike a delicate balance between growth and cultural preservation necessary to create a quality of life that all residents can embrace. Sincerely, Gary Hebdon Agua Dulce Resident | |
