Moore’s Sub Shop to Be Demolished

Land to be used for either parking or temporary structures.

The Santa Clarita City Council is expected to approve a measure to demolish the Moore’s Sub Shop building this week, after inspectors determined that the building is uninhabitable and in need of extensive repairs.

City staff is currently researching the possibility of installing a high quality temporary structure that could be used to relocate certain existing Newhall tenants during construction of their new facilities. Or, as another option, if this temporary structure proposal is not viable, then this land could be used for temporary parking for the Downtown Newhall area.

It’s not clear which existing Newhall tenants are being considered for this temporary structure. We do know that the first businesses to be displaced as part of the Old Town Newhall Redevelopment Project will be those along Spruce Street, which is where the "library project" is supposed to be built. Hopefully some of those businesses will be allowed to use this temporary space effectively while new facilities are put in place for their use. Without something like this in place, these businesses will be scrambling for viable space elsewhere in Santa Clarita, which is in relatively short supply.

The long term plans for the Moore’s Sub Shop location are to turn it into a Museum Complex. Previously, the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association had been offered this space to use as temporary quarters, but this option was tabled when it was determined that the building needed too much work to bring it up to building and safety standards.
