Newhall Hardware Closes Its Doors After Celebrating 60 Years in Business

Another landmark Newhall business becomes a casualty.

Newhall Hardware has announced that it will be closing its doors forever as soon as the current inventory is liquidated.

Newhall Hardware first opened its doors in 1947, and was purchased in 1998 by current owner Victor Feany. Newhall Hardware always prided itself on its "if we don't have it, you don't need it" attitude, with lots of hard-to-find items in stock.

Ironically, Newhall Hardware just celebrated its 60th anniversary with a big block party this last August. Apparently one of the biggest factors forcing the store closing was the lack of parking in the area, which probably wasn't helped much by the City's failed back-in parking plan that affected the store for several months.

Newhall Hardware will have a liquidation sale starting January 29 to sell off all remaining inventory. Many items are also being offered both on eBay and on Gun Broker Auctions.

This is the second significant store closing in the Downtown Newhall area in less than a month, with The Antique Flower Garden closing in late December. It's very sad to see these Newhall landmarks closing their doors and becoming just an entry in the area's history books.

Meanwhile, a small retail property nearby at 24363 San Fernando Road is listed for sale at $515,000 (with a $70,000 price reduction!). The previous tenant of this location was Discoteca El Sol.

What does this mean for Downtown Newhall and the Old Town Newhall Redevelopment Project? Nothing positive, that's for sure! With existing businesses either shutting their doors voluntarily or being forced out by the City of Santa Clarita, it seems that Downtown Newhall is rapidly becoming Ghost Town Newhall.

Business owners along Spruce Street in Downtown Newhall report that they're still in limbo over being evicted via the eminent domain process for the supposed Library Project that is slated to take their place. While I can't offer anything specific on this blog at the moment as to what's going on there, I can say that many of the property and business owners there feel that they're being treated like the Coots in Bridgepoop.

In other Downtown Newhall news this week, the City of Santa Clarita voted to ante up $25k to change the San Fernando Road street name to Newhall Avenue from the 14 Freeway to 5th street so people would know that they're passing Newhall on the freeway instead of San Fernando, thereby notifying the world that there's shopping to be had if they jump off the freeway. Not sure where they're trying to entice people to shop at, but at least it will no longer be a secret that you can access the Newhall area via the 14 Freeway.

So sad

This is so sad that such a quaint historic area is going to eventually be lost.

Newhall Redevelopment Gone Awry

Linda -- Thank you so much for the commentary on Newhall Hardware. The lack of positive intervention by the City of Santa Clarita in saving these historical stores smacks of shortsighted vision. Stores like Newhall Hardware and The Antique Flower Shop provide a unique environment that you cannot find elsewhere. That is why people go there, it's for the experience. We will obviously lose some more of our country charm once the store closes its doors.

Saving gems like this is what the downtown Newhall Redevelopment should be about. It's nice to see renovation but if we have cookie cutter stores for trendy shoppers, I'm afraid that we've missed the point of this whole exercise.

I live in Agua Dulce now even though I was a long time resident of Newhall. We have a similar hardware store but nothing close to the history that Newhall Hardware carries with it. My hope is always that wise city planning can strike a delicate balance between growth and cultural preservation necessary to create a quality of life that all residents can embrace.

Sincerely,

Gary Hebdon

It's not over 'till it's over!

Your feelings about Newhall Hardware are shared by thousands of us. I don't blame the city entirely on the tentative closure of the store but they sure didn't help matters. We are now asking the city to come through with a plan to save Newhall Hardware, sighting the historic and convenience values it brings to the community. Please have your readers call and e-mail city hall at (661) 255-4395 / bkellar@santa-clarita.com

They may also attend the CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING, Tuesday, February 12, 2008, 6:00 PM, at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., 1st Floor, and Santa Clarita. We are promising to fill the council chambers with hundreds of Newhall Hardware Supporters.

 Thank you.

Are the same Drunk Monkeys who Design our streets doing the revitalization program?

A short rant on another stupid blunder by SCV goverment.

I got up this morning full of energy and ready to rip into a gate project at the House. On my list of spots to go for material was Newhall Hardware, well maybe I should say Material and advice!

Advice, something that like common since is in very short supply nowadays, in fact I maybe wrong but Newhall Hardware was one of the last places in LA county in fact all of So California that one could still get it!

Well after talking to a friend and mentioning that I was going to Newhall Hardware I was stunned to hear him say he heard it was closing!

I could not believe it! It was like someone said they have closed Mt Rushmore, the Grand Canyon or turned off Old Faithful! My heart sank cause I knew it was true, another victim of the Revitalization Program!

Revitalization? Who asked for this project? I did not in fact I do not know of one person who did? Downtown Newhall from ½ mile above Lyons Ave down to the 14 had all the “Good” stores left in this valley! Store’s that made a living by serving you! Not just from the fact that there was no where else to go! No “cookie cutter” business run and staffed by kids and people who don’t really have any interest in the jobs or businesses their in.

I saw the seeds of destruction start over a year ago when the traffic pattern was changed. I talked to several friends who worked at business their and they all had a gloomy outlook.

The talk was of the Library, Library? Why would you locate a library there? It’s not convenient to any large areas that would really use it? I better Idea would have be to create a larger more modern central library! That area is on the edge, not a place to locate a library… but then again common sense… and Newhall Hardware is closed!

I don’t understand why you would try to revitalize an area by destroying good existing business to bring in the same type business that we already have "struggling" in other areas of the city? We had a quaint old style downtown, a Heritage! And they are destroying it! What will go next? The Way station? Green Thumb?

Why not give the existing business parking and bring other stores in to supplement the great places we already have? I moved here over 20 years ago when tree lined two lane roads covered the area and at stop signs people waved! I have seen much development and I know you can’t stop it but to tear apart out history and Heritage is criminal! You can’t get it back!

Other communities have redeveloped areas just like ours but did it in a sane way listening and working with local business. Not treating them like they were in the way of how SCV government think things should be.

Look at Santa Paula, Ventura, and other close by areas that prospered by developing the existing flavor of the area, not trying to make another "City Walk" I hate those plastic paseos!

And it will be a cold day in you know where before I set foot in your redeveloped Newhall. Tell that to your prospective cookie cutter outlets! And oh by the way don’t forget to have an overpriced coffee shop!

Great Post, Bill!

Bill, I agree with you completely... I've elevated your comment to a new post so others will be sure to read it.
