Saturday Savers: Operation Light Exchange

Exchange inefficient halogen and incandescent light fixtures for new, Energy Star labeled lamps.

This week’s Saturday Savers tip is about a free light exchange program offered by Southern California Edison, called Operation Light Exchange.

Operation Light Exchange is a program offered by Southern California Edison (SCE) for its current customers to exchange inefficient halogen and incandescent light fixtures for new, Energy Star labeled lamps.

You bring in your old lamps, and they’ll give you new Energy Star lamps… for FREE!

The lamps are exchanged for like-kind lamps with the Energy Star rating, so if you bring in a table lamp, you’ll get a new table lamp (with bulb) in exchange. They’ll also exchange floor lamps and torchieres.

Here’s what they’ll accept in the Operation Light Exchange program under the current rules:

  • Halogen Torchiere Floor Lamps
  • Incandescent Table Lamps
  • Incandescent Desk Lamps

The lamps you’ll receive in exchange are manufactured primarily by Sunpark, Maxlite, and Greenlite. And they’re not ugly institutional-looking things either… click here to take a look!

What’s the Catch?

Surprisingly, there is none… You just have to meet the following requirements to participate in Operation Light Exchange:

  • Be a current SCE customer. Expect to be asked to show your driver’s license with an address in Southern California Edison’s territory, or a current SCE bill.
  • The exchange is limited to 10 lamps per customer.
  • The exchange is only open to customers 18 years or older.
  • Old lamps are exchanged for the new lamps based on lumens of your old lamp (60-75 watt, 100 watt, 120-150 watt).
  • You must attend a scheduled lamp exchange event.

Operation Light Exchange events are scheduled periodically, with the next one antipated sometime in May. This is early notice for the Exchange, so if you’re thinking of replacing your old energy-eater lamps you may want to wait until the next Exchange event to save yourself some cash.

The biggest Operation Light Exchange event was held in Rosemead in October 2007. They exchanged a whopping 10,056 lamps at that event, which will generate a savings of 786,115 kilowatt hours of energy!
