Santa Clarita Fires: How Big, and How Often?

Heatmaps show how often wildfires rage in the Santa Clarita area.

Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, as well as those considering moving to the Santa Clarita Valley, are wondering whether the area has a history of major wildfires.

PropertyShark has created a heatmap of the history of wildfires in the Santa Clarita area, showing wildfires dating as far back as 1911.

Santa Clarita’s firefighters and Sheriff’s did a fantasic job of saving homes and lives during these horrendous firestorms. With only about 25 homes lost, they were able to keep property damage to a minimum. Evacuations were calm and organized for the most part, with residents being evacuated early to avoid panic and road congestion.

The San Diego area, where over 1,300 homes were lost, had more challenges when it came to its firefighting resources. San Diego residents complain that Marines at Camp Pendleton and MCAS Mirimar as well as the Navy at North Island Coronado were not used sufficiently to aid in fighting the area’s fires. According to Peter Toner, a Realtor who specializes in the Rancho Santa Fe area, "the Navy was standing by with 12 helicopters equipped to assist – but Cal Fire would only allow two helicopters to fly because they insisted that a fire Captain ’spotter’ accompany each flight to co-ordinate with the ground."
