Looking for energy saving tips to help survive the hot Santa Clarita summer? As a Santa Clarita EcoBroker, I'm always looking for ways to save energy (and money!) as well as natural resources.

For some great tips on insulation and other energy conservation methods, visit Owens Corning's Pink Panther Energy Blog, where the Pink Panther is "keeping a paw on the pulse of energy conservation".

Owens Corning's studies show that homeowners can save as much at 30 percent of their summer energy bills by adding proper insulation to their attics. "Adding insulation to the attic is the easiest, most cost-effective thing homeowners can do to reduce home heating and cooling costs," said Gale Tedhams, product and program manager for residential insulation at Owens Corning. "Our survey results show many Americans know their attic is equipped with at least some insulation, but many don't know how much they can save by using more. Installing attic insulation is a project that won't break the bank, can be done over a weekend and can ultimately help homeowners save money and energy."

Adding Attic Insulation During Summer Months

Here's a great tip from the Pink Panther on adding attic insulation during the hot summer months: "If you want to start saving money immediately by installing insulation now during the peak air conditioning season, there are steps to take that can make the job easier. For example, buy your insulation the day before you plan to install it so you can start early in the morning before the attic heats up. If you can wait a few days, look for a time when a cooler front moves in and drops the temperature and humidity. Get some help so you can get in and out of the attic faster, and be sure to drink lots of fluids before, during and after the job. Regardless of the heat, be sure to wear long sleeves and pants, gloves, safety glasses and respiratory protection against dust."

Radiant Heat Barriers: Are They Worth the Cost?

According to the Pink Panther, "Testing has shown that it is more cost effective to add insulation than a radiant barrier. Additionally, the actual reduction in heat flow achieved through properly installed radiant barriers is substantially less than that claimed by some manufacturers."
