Cemex Declares Truce with Santa Clarita

City of Santa Clarita and Cemex to work towards a compromise.
"Although it's too early to claim a full victory against the Cemex mine project, the City of Santa Clarita is optimistic that they'll be able to come to a workable solution with Cemex."

After years of battling the proposed Cemex mega mine off the 14 freeway in Santa Clarita, the City of Santa Clarita and Cemex have declared a truce and will work towards a compromise solution so Cemex can have a mine elsewhere.

Cemex had earlier stated that it would open the mine near Soledad Canyon in Santa Clarita in 2008, but has now halted those plans and will spend the year in negotiating a compromise with the City of Santa Clarita. In response, the City of Santa Clarita has taken down all of it's anti-Cemex campaign messages, including billboards, bus wraps and postcard campaings.

The BLM has stated that Cemex still has the rights to mine the Santa Clarita property, and that the situation is now between the City of Santa Clarita and Cemex. It is expected that the BLM will authorize another property for Cemex to mine if they agree not to mine the Santa Clarita property.

Although it's too early to claim a full victory against the Cemex mine project, the City of Santa Clarita is optimistic that they'll be able to come to a workable solution with Cemex.

The City of Santa Clarita will continue to work to annex the 1,885 acres of city-owned property adjacent to the Cemex property, but will not attempt to annex the Cemex property at this time. The City of Santa Clarita has already won the battle to annex the Stonecrest area, which is the closest residential area to the proposed mining site.
