Santa Clarita’s Parkland Initiative

Open Space Plan to be revised and put to the vote again.

The Santa Clarita City Council is planning to create a revised Open Space and Parkland Preservation District Plan (Open Space Plan) that they’re hoping will have a better chance of passing voter’s scrutiny than their prior attempt at the same plan.

Stating that the prior plan failed because it was both too complex and that it’s presentation had poor timing, the City Council will be reworking the Plan in upcoming months.

The Open Space is important to Santa Clarita residents, as it allows funding for the City to buy up public lands that would be used for parks and sports fields instead of being developed into residential or commercial complexes. While I’m certainly not anti-developer, I do feel that some open space needs to be preserved to maintain the quality of life in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The prior plan proposed a fee of about $25 per year to be added to each property owner’s tax bill. I really don’t think that’s too much to ask - just a few less Starbucks for most people.
